What a beautiful day for inclusion! This past Saturday, PCC members, families, friends, and supporters gathered at Sunken Meadow State Park for our Walk for Inclusion: A Celebration of Self-Determination Walkathon. With more than 100 people coming together under gorgeous fall sunshine, the day was filled with community spirit, encouragement, and plenty of reasons to celebrate!
Our walkers kicked off the morning beneath colorful towers of blue, green, and yellow balloons, ready to take on the approximately two-mile route. Some participants proudly wore custom team T-shirts, while others carried handmade signs and banners cheering on the cause. The route took us along the beach boardwalk before winding through a peaceful wooded path, giving everyone a chance to enjoy the beautiful surroundings while walking for a meaningful purpose.
At the finish line, our walkers made their moment count! Participants burst through the finish tape for their very own photo finish, symbolizing the barriers they are breaking and the possibilities that open up when people have the freedom to make their own choices. Each walker received a gold medal to celebrate their accomplishment—a well-deserved reminder that every step mattered!
An early morning walk calls for a little fuel, and our walkers were ready to go thanks to a spread of bagels, apples, bananas, granola bars, and plenty of water. A wonderful crew of volunteers worked hard behind the scenes to make the day extra special, and Special Treats Bakery sweetened the celebration with a delicious donation of cupcakes.
But the fun didn't stop at the finish line! Our Executive Director led everyone in a relaxing cooldown yoga session, bringing a moment of peace, connection, and unity to the day's festivities. Patty from PBS brought along games to keep the excitement going, while some of our members took the microphone to share a few of their favorite karaoke hits. Add in our 50/50 raffle, PCC T-shirt sales, and lots of community spirit, and we had all the ingredients for an unforgettable day!
Best of all, this walk was about more than miles, medals, and memories. It was a celebration of our members, their right to self-determination, and the power of a community that believes in independence without isolation. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our fundraising teams and supporters, we also raised over $18,000 to support PCC's mission!
A huge thank-you to everyone who walked, cheered, volunteered, donated, and helped make our first Walk for Inclusion such a success. Together, we took steps toward a more inclusive community—and proved that when we walk together, we can make a real difference!
